The importance of properly managed backups.

When is the last time you tested your data backup?  If you can’t remember you might want to take a look sooner rather than later.  Your data back up is your company’s lifeline when your system fails. Like a lifeline, it’s not much help if you can’t reach it and it can’t save you if it isn’t strong.  We recommend scheduled recovery tests  weekly .  For a simple recovery test, have your IT department recover one of your financial Excel spreadsheets. Then make sure that you can open the spreadsheet and check the file.

Backup technology has changed a lot in recent years. Disk based backups have replaced tape and continuous data protection has replaced nightly differential and weekend full routines.

And if these terms aren’t familiar to you, consider having your backup procedures reviewed by a third party to make certain your company  fully meets the requirements of the Securities and Exchange Commission’s (SEC) Rule 17a-4(f) governing long-term data retention.
